What is CoStar Prompting?

CoStar is a prompting framework that structures prompts into six defined components: Context, Objective, Style, Tone, Audience, and Response format. It's a checklist for writing prompts that consistently produce high-quality outputs by ensuring you never leave the model guessing about what you actually want.

Most people write prompts as a single muddled sentence: 'Write me a blog post about AI.' The model fills the blanks with generic assumptions and produces generic output. CoStar solves this by forcing you to specify six elements explicitly. Context: the background the model needs — who you are, what the situation is, what's already been tried. Objective: the specific goal you want accomplished, stated concretely. Style: the writing style — formal academic, conversational, punchy marketing, technical documentation. Tone: the emotional register — enthusiastic, neutral, skeptical, empathetic. Audience: who the output is for — beginners, experts, executives, children. Response format: the structure of the output — bullet list, markdown headers, JSON, table, prose paragraphs. Instead of 'Write me a blog post about AI', a CoStar-structured prompt becomes: 'Context: I run a productivity newsletter for busy executives. Objective: Write a 500-word piece on AI meeting tools. Style: Practical, example-heavy. Tone: Confident but not hype-y. Audience: Non-technical executives considering AI adoption. Response format: Three clear sections with bolded takeaways.' The difference in output quality is dramatic and consistent. CoStar is particularly valuable for teams standardizing prompt workflows — once the template is established, output quality becomes reliable rather than dependent on individual prompting skill.
